Kev Campbell Was He

A comedic one-person show about a journey of self-discovery from a chance nightclub toilet encounter.

In a nightclub toilet in the heart of Glasgow,  a failed graffiti attempt goes wrong and eighteen-year-old Weegie, Kev, ends up meeting and befriending a stranger…a posh young guy of all people.

An unlikely friendship evolves as the boys discover mutual ground. Bonded by The Great Gatsby, Freddie Mercury, and a love of storytelling this mismatched duo weave a coming-of-age story of self-discovery.

Kev Campbell Was He is a hilarious and moving one-person show that explores masculinity in modern Scotland. It was a finalist of the David MacLennan Award 2024 and received rave reviews at last year’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Co-presented with Ayr Gaiety and Traverse Theatre.

Content information: Homophobic language, strong language, toilet humour

Please note this show replaced Hell as part of the season. Read this announcement for more details.

His work often centres on being live and immediate, and hopes to challenge assumptions about what theatre can be. Most recently, he was assistant director to Brian Logan on his inaugural show Jellyfish (Katy Nixon, A Play, A Pie and A Pint), and directed the Edinburgh Fringe run of Alexander Tait’s debut play, Kev Campbell Was He which was shortlisted for the David MacLennan Award, and went on to win a Scottish Arts Club Bright Spark Award and a Scottish Emerging Theatre Awards Production of the Year. Prior to this he directed a production of Harold Pinter’s The Dumb Waiter (Edinburgh Fringe) and been assistant director on adaptations of Patrick Hamilton’s ROPE (KU Leuven), and Bertolt Brecht’s The Life of Galileo (KU Leuven), and YERMA (Edinburgh University).
