Walking his neighbours’ dogs has kept Ronnie together during a very difficult lockdown.  But when a series of mishaps result in the dogs slipping their leads and disappearing off into the woods, Ronnie’s forced to take chase and face up to some hard truths.  

Man’s Best Friend is a comic and poignant play about the give-and-take of companionship.

This is Douglas Maxwell’s third Òran Mór show.  Backpacker Blues was followed by A Respectable Widow Takes To Vulgarity (co-produced with the Traverse), which has been re-staged many times, including a production in New York and a Quebecois French version in Montreal.  It was nominated as one of Òran Mór’s favourite plays and has been filmed for BBC Scotland.  

His online lockdown work includes Beautiful Boy for Pitlochry Festival Theatre, The Assumption for Solar Bear and the Royal Conservatoire Scotland and Fatbaws for the National Theatre of Scotland and the BBC.  Fatbaws, directed by and starring Peter Mullan, has been seen by over a million people and was nominated for a Scottish BAFTA. 

Other plays include Decky Does a Bronco, Mancub, Promises Promises, Charlie Sonata, Fever Dream: Southside, Yer Granny, and The Whip Hand – those last two shows starring Johnathan Watson. 

His upcoming productions include Orphans, a new musical for the National Theatre of Scotland.  

JONATHAN WATSON was born and raised in Glasgow. He trained at The Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. His career has spanned television, film and theatre. Most recently, he has featured in FIBRES, directed by Jemima, and YER GRANNY and THE WHIP HAND, written by Douglas. Television work includes NAKED VIDEO, CITY LIGHTS, RAB C. NESBITT, THE BILL, CASUALTY, GARROW'S LAW, NEW TRICKS, UPSTART CROW, BOB SERVANT, BACK, ONLY AN EXCUSE?, TWO DOORS DOWN, THIS TIME...WITH ALAN PARTRIDGE, and DOCTOR WHO. He is married with one son, and lives in Glasgow.

JEMIMA LEVICK was appointed as Artistic Director of A Play, a Pie and a Pint in April 2021. Prior to this she was Artistic Director & Chief Executive of Stellar Quines Theatre Company [2016 – 2021] and before that, Associate Director and latterly Artistic Director of Dundee Rep Theatre [2009 – 2016].  She has won and been nominated for a number of awards and has directed more than 34 professional productions.  As a director and producer has worked with a number of companies, including BBC Studios, The Citizens, Imaginate, Leeds Playhouse, Leicester Curve, Queens Theatre Hornchurch, The Royal Lyceum Theatre, The National Theatre of Scotland, Dundee Rep, Borderline, Grid Iron, Perissology, The Traverse and Paines Plough.
