What's On

“I’m not short of ideas” – Jemima Levick spoke to The Scotsman Arts’ Joyce McMillan about taking on the role of Artistic Director at Òran Mór’s A Play, A Pie and A Pint, building on David MacLennan’s legacy, and her initial plans for the lunchtime theatre programme.

Scotland is just bursting with talent, and if I can give Oran Mor an even younger and more diverse programme than it already has, I’ll be delighted. I also want to build partnerships with an even wider range of theatres, across Scotland and beyond. It’s not about making drastic changes, though; it’s a brilliant formula, that has attracted a wonderful, adventurous audience, and I want to create seasons that have that Play, Pie And Pint quality of surprise, of taking you somewhere completely different every week. One of my first ideas is to commission a brand new musical about all the great historical figures that have made Glasgow the city it is. But beyond that – well, we’ll see. Let’s just say that I’m not short of ideas; and that – pandemic or not – I can’t wait to get started.

What's On

Jemima Levick, Artistic Director and Chief Executive of Stellar Quines Theatre Company, is to step down from her role to take up the position of Artistic Director at A Play, a Pie and a Pint.

Jemima Levick

Her new position will see her become responsible for commissioning and overseeing the production of 35 new plays a year, the most of any theatre in the UK. Founded in 2004 by David MacLennan, A Play, a Pie and a Pint is the UK’s most successful lunchtime theatre company, every week presenting a brand new play at lunchtime at Òran Mór in Glasgow’s West End. Commencing her role in spring 2021, Jemima will lead the company in telling a diverse range of stories and uncovering new talent in Scotland and from further afield.

Jemima joined Stellar Quines, an award-winning touring theatre company based in Edinburgh which works to celebrate the value and diversity of women and girls, in March 2016. During her time with the company, she has directed a number of productions including This Girl Laughs, This Girl Cries, This Girl Does Nothing (a co-production with Imaginate), Bingo! (a co-production with Grid Iron), The Lover (a co-production with The Royal Lyceum and Scottish Dance Theatre) and The Last Queen of Scotland (in association with Dundee Rep and National Theatre Scotland). Most recently, she directed a new filmed version of Fibres by Frances Poet (a co-production with Citizens Theatre) which premiered online on 25th November and will be available to watch for free for a month. In addition to directing, she has also overseen Stellar Quines’ diverse programme of Creative Learning and Artist Development projects, and this year commissioned a new report Where are the women? Part 2, analysing numbers of women in creative roles in subsidised theatres in Scotland.

An award-winning director, Jemima was previously Associate and latterly Artistic Director of Dundee Rep where she directed more than 18 productions. She trained at Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh, and on a Scottish Arts Council Director Traineeship with the Royal Lyceum Theatre.

I’m absolutely delighted to be joining A Play, a Pie and a Pint in the spring of next year – to continue the brilliant work of David, April and Morag, and take the company into the next phase of its existence.  As an organisation that started out as ‘an experiment’, it has long punched above its weight – the opportunities it offers are infinite, and feels particularly important now, at a time when live performance has stalled – PPP has a big part to play to help theatre bounce back.
While I’m delighted to be headed west, I am very sorry to be leaving Stellar Quines.  It’s such a brilliant, vital organisation and one that has taught me a huge amount.  I leave behind an exceptional staff team and board of governors, who I know will do all they can to work with the new artistic lead and take the organisation into its next chapter

Jemima Levick

Times there Was
& Times there Will Be.
We are thrilled to welcome Jemima Levick to A Play, a Pie and a Pint as the company’s new Artistic Director.  All shortlisted candidates for the position were outstanding, our board were seriously impressed and ultimately spoilt for choice.
These are challenging times for theatre but Jemima’s vast experience and nous will serve her well, and we look forward to the magic she will undoubtedly bring to David MacLennan’s legacy at A Play, a Pie and a Pint. At Òran Mór we will work hand in glove with Jemima to ensure we hit the ground running when restrictions are lifted, and with the public behind us, we know great success will follow.

Colin Beattie, Executive Producer, A Play, a Pie and a Pint

Stellar Quines has been so fortunate to have Jemima as our leader.  For the last five years she’s inspired the company and taken us to new creative heights, supporting women and girls in theatre.  She’s also opened up transformational spaces for women whose voices are often unheard. We wish her all the best in her new role where she will continue to be a changemaker for theatre in Scotland and internationally.

The Signalman by Peter Arnott wins big at the 2020 CATS Awards!

Peter Arnott’s Tay Bridge Disaster monologue won three awards at the 2020 CATS AWARDS, including the supreme ‘Best Production’ award. Ken Alexander was also shortlisted for ‘Best Director’.

Best Male Performance
Tom McGovern (Thomas Barclay) WINNER

Best New Play
Peter Arnott, The Signalman WINNER

Best Production
The Signalman, Peter Arnott WINNER

Best Director
Ken Alexander, The Signalman SHORTLISTED

Originally performed at Òran Mór last September, this beautifully written monologue examines the Tay Bridge Disaster from the unique perspective of Thomas Barclay, the young signalman who waved the Edinburgh-Dundee train through on to the bridge that evening. Forty years on, in 1919, Thomas relives the events of that night which have haunted him.

Who is responsible when accidents occur, and why do we need somebody to blame…even if it’s ourselves?

The Signalman forms a solo companion piece to Peter Arnott’s 2019 play Tay Bridge and was conceived by Arnott from an original idea by actor Tom McGovern.

“I’m delighted about the award. I’m especially pleased for Tom. It was conversations with him back when we did The Cone Gatherers that led ultimately to both this play, and to Tay Bridge, its companion piece for Dundee Rep.”

Peter Arnott

A highlight of the Scottish theatre calendar, CATS celebrates the actors, directors, playwrights and other theatre artists who have made the most thrilling contributions of the year.

There will be no online awards ceremony, because we love the live experience, and will celebrate this work at a live ceremony and party just as soon as that is possible. In the meantime, though, we hope the celebration of these wonderful shows from 2019–20 will remind us of the sheer richness of Scotland’s theatre scene, of what we stand to lose if we don’t support our theatre-makers through this crisis, and of how much there is to look forward to, when our wonderful theatres are finally able to open their doors again.”

Joyce McMillan, CATS co-convenor.

SUNSET BOULEVARD: THE LUNCHTIME CUT
by Morag Fullarton

Wed 6th – Sun 10th May

Featuring Juliet Cadzow, John Kielty, Mark McDonnell and Frances Thorburn

Directed by Morag Fullarton

A bitter comedy and a dark tragedy, the story centres on a wealthy, egotistical, faded star, Norma Desmond, desperate to ‘return to the millions of fans she deserted’, and young, down-on-his luck writer, Joe Gillis, who sees a opportunity to exploit the situation.

‘Juliet Cadzow is by turns toweringly grand or boa constrictor possessive before she sashays into tragedy’ ★★★★★

The Herald

‘A class act all round. Suddenly, other plays got small’. ★★★★★

Arts Blog

Sunset Boulevard: The Lunchtime Cut is both a savage indictment of the star system (and the monsters it creates) and a depiction of a writer’s impotence in Hollywood. Based on Billy Wilder’s classic film noir, Morag Fullarton’s adaption retains the dark comic heart of the original while turning it into a theatrical treat.

A new musical comedy about grief, greed and grease.

Andy McGregor is a director, composer and playwright. He trained at Glasgow University and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. BUTTERFLY KISS (Part 1)
by Dave Anderson

Wed 17th – Sun 21st June

Cast: Dave Anderson, Christina Strachan, Davey Anderson, Rebekah Lumsden, James Lowrie and Fraser Speirs

Directed by Stasi Schaeffer

An Old Guy visits a “Seaside Museum” on his bus pass, where he finds a Punch & Judy stall. When no-one is looking, he peeks in, and finds himself in the year 1960. He’s 15 years old, and holidaying on the coast of the West of Scotland.

It’s a world of rock’n’roll, “teenagers”, burgeoning consumerism, rampant hormones, lazy daytimes gazing into rock pools, love of all things American, and A Girl.

Not The Girl he’s left behind and whom he’s afraid of losing to an Older Man (17 years-old). No. An altogether more exotic creature. The one who introduces him to the Butterfly Kiss.

Dwight Eisenhower is President of the United States. Elvis releases “It’s Now or Never”

A message in a bottle is washed up on the beach. People have jobs, making things. There’s only one TV channel, to which only some people have access.

BUTTERFLY KISS (Part 2 including The Day I Found The Blues)
by Dave Anderson

Wed 24th – Sun 28th June

Cast: Dave Anderson, Christina Strachan, Davey Anderson, Rebekah Lumsden, James Lowrie and Fraser Speirs

Directed by Stasi Schaeffer

“The day I found the Blues
The sun was in the sky
The Lord was in His Heaven
No tear was in my eye
No holes was in the soles of my shoes
The day I found the Blues…”

It wasn’t the Cold War: at fifteen, he’d grown up with that, and it was just a fact of life…
It wasn’t the girl back home who’d chucked him: he’d found a holiday romance here on the West Coast in a sunny August, 1960…
It wasn’t the dismal “turns” at the local Miner’s Welfare: he was too young yet to be subjected to that…
It was a record – and then another record, and then another – it was the music…

Melania
by Brooks & King

Wed 1st – Sun 5th July

Cast: Kirsty Malone, Margaret Preece, Frances Thorburn

Directed by Ken Alexander

It’s a long way from the Eastern Bloc to the East Wing – and for one former glamour model turned FLOTUS it hasn’t been a happy journey.  Can the ghosts of Eleanor Roosevelt and Jackie Kennedy lift our heroine’s spirits and show her what it really means to be First Lady? A brand new musical comedy from the creators of Wee Free! The Musical.

The Beaches of St Valery
by Stuart Hepburn

Wed 22nd – Sun 26th July

Cast: Ron Donachie, James Rottger and Ashley Smith

Directed by Stuart Hepburn

In June 1940, Churchill hailed the “miracle of Dunkirk,” when all 350,000 men of the British Expeditionary Force were evacuated to safety.

But for the men of  51st Highland Division, there was no miracle. Sacrificed in a secret  political deal, Churchill  ordered them to stay and fight to the last bullet.

Against overwhelming odds, 9,000 Scotsmen surrendered at St-Valery-en-Caux, and were marched to POW camps in Poland.

All of them were betrayed.

Some of them escaped.

One of them fell in love.

The Beaches Of St Valery is his story.

An outstanding production that’s acted out with integrity, humour and a lovely awareness of what these characters represent even now.

DIXIE WHITTINGTON: THE HAMECOMING by Morag Fullarton

*The 2019 Christmas Panto has now Sold Out*

Dixie has discovered the streets of London are not paved with gold and is down to her last two bob when wicked landlord Skinflint chucks her & her cat, Fleabag, out of their ‘super cosy’ lodgings (under stair cupboard). Now penniless and homeless Dixie resolves to get hame to her Granny in Glasgow for Christmas. But how?

Dixie is sure something will turn up, and it does – when the legendary Bow Bells whisper “turn again Whittington” she does, but doing a turn in a lowly dive to a room full of drunken sailors was not quite the ‘turn’ she expected.

When silver tongued pirate Captain Cut-Thrapple offers her a passage north in return for ‘ratcatcher’ cat Fleabag and some ‘light duties’ can he be trusted? Is the ship’s cook Dame Dumplin’ as sweet as she seems? Will the pirate galleon ‘Partick’s Revenge’ really sail up the Clyde in time for Christmas? And surely that coastline looks more like Grenada than Greenock…

Enter hunky action hero Inverary Jones and magical mermaid Suzi-the Single-Fish, with their help Dixie might just make it back to her Glasgow Granny in time for the bells!

Directed by Morag Fullarton | Cast: Dave Anderson, John Kielty, Amy Scott & Clare Waugh

What's On

A Play, A Pie and a Pint is delighted to announce that we have been awarded an Early Day Motion from the House of Commons upon reaching the milestone of producing 500 plays.

Patrick Grady (MP Glasgow North) was aware that this year marks a very special milestone of 500 performances for A Play, a Pie and a Pint at Glasgow’s famous Òran Mór. As such, he has commemorated this fantastic achievement by presenting an Early Day Motion (EDM) in the House of Commons. EDMs are tabled in the House of Commons to put on record or draw attention to specific events or campaigns. Patrick believes that the success of this Glasgow institution should be celebrated and this is a great way to mark the occasion.

Thank you to everyone who has supported us over the last fifteen years, here’s to the next 500 plays!

Join us on June 7th at Òran Mór for From Shore to Shore 漂洋过海 an innovative new site specific show touring the UK in 2017.

Three stories, three lives, three journeys to find a place to call home.

Cheung Wing is escaping from war, Mei Lan’s had enough of the potato peeler and Yi Di wants the impossible; her parents’ approval.

Award-winning writer, Mary Cooper, with multilingual collaborator, M.W. Sun, draws on real life stories from Chinese interviewees living in the UK to create a powerful new drama of love and loss, struggle and survival, performed alongside live music and great food.

Accompanied by a delicious two-course meal, From Shore to Shore features a cast of seven actor-musicians and blends English, Mandarin and Cantonese to tell the stories of Chinese communities in the UK today.

For this show Òran Mór’s Auditorium will be transformed into a Chinese restaurant. The ticket price includes a two-course meal.

From Shore to Shore is presented by On The Wire in partnership with the Business Confucius Institute at the University of Leeds and the Confucius Institute at the University of Glasgow.

PUNocchio

Written by Gary McNair

Music by Dave Anderson

For hundreds of years Pinocchio has been the liar. That’s just been his thing. He thought it made him cool. But now, in 2017 he’s realised that lying is nothing special, everybody’s at it- politicians, bankers, news reporters. The games up. So Pinocchio is moving on and has decided that comedy is his thing. He rebrands as Punocchio and somehow everyone still seems to think he’s the fanny.

Come and join us for the singing, dancing and silliness of the Òran Mór Summer Panto!

LUNCHTIME SUMMER PANTO 2016

RUMPLE STILL-SKINT
By Gary McNair and Dave Anderson

4th – 23rd July | Mondays – Saturdays

There’s a miller, he’s skint. Of course he is, he’s a miller.
His daughter is beautiful. Of course she is, it’s a panto.
One day, the miller farms his daughter off to a handsome prince on the promise that she can spin straw into gold. Needless to say, she can’t. She’s never even seen a spinning wheel in her puff.
However, suddenly, by a fabulous Coup de Theatre, a funny wee man turns up from nowhere and, in another Coup de Theatre he spins the straw into gold. How convenient!
Anyway, you know the rest.
Except, how do Donald Trumpet and Boris Johnstone fit into it all? And what’s a coup de Theatre? Come on- you’re a Westender! Surely you say it all the time. (Plus, we’ll wander so far from the story to wedge our gags in that it doesn’t really matter if you know the story or not.)

Come and join us for the singing, dancing and silliness of the Oran Mor Summer Panto!
Now, what’s that wee guy’s name again?!

What's On

Congratulations to our most recent Critics’ Circle winners, Alicia Sutton, Isobel McConnel and Robert Somerville. Check out the winning reviews…

Alicia Sutton ~ Broth

The oozy gravy served alongside the pork pies is a perfect accompaniment to this bloody tale. Set inside a family kitchen, the scene is ordinary but the circumstances are not. Who is the slumped figure beside Granny maniacally munching shortbread?

‘Broth’ is at times slapstick and at others poignant. It’s a gripping story and we left with several thoughtful questions (perhaps in part due to our fledgling dexterity at understanding Scottish accents). We’d put a Play, a Pie and a Pint in the number one spot for top things to do when visiting Glasgow.

Isobel McConnel, ~ Whisky Galore:

Ochone, ochee uisge-beatha for free!

After that it is really all at sea!

Those Toddy folks seem “on the rocks”

As onwards they amble….no real fun, no shocks!

Subtitles are fine, we follow just so

The problem’s the script, there’s nowhere to go!

The original was superb..an epic ..real magic

The conversion’s lost focus which is truly tragic

The acting is excellent but we really want more

Disappearing without trace Scottish Theatre’s Whisky Galore

Raise a dram to the concept…an idea worth airing

But with this version, are the audience really at all caring?

Robert Somerville ~ No Nothing

No Nothing is a deeply moving and quietly inspirational two-hander written by Alan Spence. It celebrates Jimmy Reid and Edwin Morgan, two iconic, though very different, wordsmiths. The Scottish poetic tradition of flyting is used to reveal these two great Scots in all their contrasting complexity. The play’s most moving moments are deeply personal, but it’s message is also political. Any play which can reference Brecht, Dick Gaughan and The Proclaimers has got to have something interesting to say

In its celebration of the power of words, love, life, Scotland and hope, No Nothing is a play which cries Yes Please!
